Supporting associations and foundations.
Lesaffre is committed to various organisations around the world.
Société Industrielle Lesaffre (SIL) in Marcq-en-Baroeul supports the humanitarian aid project of the AFID* for education: the Lesaffre School in Bangladesh.
Since 1999, SIL has supported the humanitarian aid programme partially financed by the AFID in Bangladesh, notably participating in the opening of two “Lesaffre Schools” at the initiative of one of its SAF-instant distributors for more than 30 years, Mr A. R. Chowdhury.
The latter wanted to support the education of children in his birth village in Bangladesh. The project has since been taken over by his two children, who visit the school once or twice per year.
The two schools are in Laksham, 120 km south-east of Dakha, the capital of Bangladesh. The goals are to educate and school young children in one of the world’s poorest countries in order to combat illiteracy among the rural population.
The programme, initially formed for a three-year period, has been renewed for more than ten years.
Today, the two schools have more than 300 pupils aged between 3 and 10. From the age of 10, the students can take a national exam to obtain a diploma required for continuing with higher education. The success rate over the last five years is an incredible 100%!
Lesaffre supports the Digestscience Foundation
As a recognised public-interest foundation active in digestive system diseases and nutrition since 2008, Digestscience aims to carry out research into digestive illnesses such as Crohn’s disease, coeliac disease and haemorrhagic rectocolitis to find solutions to advance research and develop new treatments for illnesses.
Lesaffre is one of the two founding members; it was a decisive factor in the foundation’s creation and continues to support it. Lesaffre unites its employees around this cause and encourages them to take part in the Testathlon every year.
The Testathlon is a unique, fun and charity-oriented triathlon that combines mountain-biking, running, a water race and hiking. The funds raised during the event go to research into digestive diseases and nutrition.
IN THE UNITED STATES
Lesaffre Yeast Corporation and Red Star, partners of the Stop Hunger Now organisation
Stop Hunger Now is an international hunger relief organisation that aims to eradicate malnutrition by providing food aid and emergency aid to the most vulnerable countries, as well as to create a global commitment to mobilise the necessary resources.
The BtoC sales team at Lesaffre Yeast Corporation and Red Star decided to collaborate with Stop Hunger Now and launch a charity programme called “Baking the world a better place”.
In 2015, Red Star sponsored an initiative to package 25,000 meals in just four hours by 78 employees at the US head office in Milwaukee. One slogan succinctly sums up the organisation’s activities: Working Together to End World Hunger.
